Heritage Farm with rain and visitors

In July, Grammy Hudson and Uncle Jason came to visit, and on a rainy day we decided to go to Columbus Metro Parks Heritage Farm--a working and producing farm that does everything exactly like farming families did 100 years ago. There is no electricity or plumbing, but there is a beautiful animal barn, Gothic Revival house with a winter and summer kitchen (where folks in period dress are always working canning, soapmaking, and laundry-ing), a smokehouse with hams and bacon, a root cellar filled to the brim, an enormous house garden, wheat fields, and heirloom varieties of all kinds of farm animals. It's really, truly, beautiful and utterly fascinating. We came the day they were threshing wheat, and we went back later in the summer, so stay tuned for more pictures later on.

Here is Gus sampling a green bean he picked from the garden

My dream kitchen. Seriously.

Taking a break from the rain playing a handmade marble game

These next two are wheat threshing with work horses

The next four are the different animals--all heirloom varieties that would have been on this farm 100 years ago (there were also merino wool sheep, a small chicken, pigeons, turkeys, and cows)

Gus on Dad's back in the beautiful hayloft (naturally Matt has a coffee, but look Ma! No Beard! Look closely because it's back already)--the farm is 100% access, there is no where you can't go

I wondered who that man with your son on his back was :-)
